History behind new building

Although some OS maps still show St Mary’s church here, the church despite its listed status was demolished in 1979. It can be glimpsed in the background in SE3033 : Quarry Hill Flats, Leeds during demolition. The Diocesan office built on the site in 1980.

The Diocese of Ripon (later Ripon and Leeds) was officially renamed Leeds in 2014 when it merged with those of Wakefield and Bradford, but is informally called by the longer but more inclusive title “West Yorkshire and the Dales”.

Leeds Society for Deaf and Blind People acquired it after it being put up for sale, February 2017.

The two-storey building was designed by Jones, Stocks and Partners.
